FAQs
Your Mattress Recycling
Questions Answered
Can I bring my mattress to your facility?
Yes! Please see the bottom of our home page for a list of mattress recycling collection sites and recycling facilities in California and Oregon. Each site lists the location, hours, and corresponding recycling fee (free except for our Stockton, CA location)
How do I recycle my mattress if I don't live close to one of your mattress collection sites?
If none of our California or Oregon collection sites or recycling facilities is near you, check out the byebyemattress website for other recycling locations in your area. Rural areas and less populated counties may hold collection events, which are typically a once-per-year collection of mattresses in a community or county. Check out this site for upcoming collection events happening in Oregon or contact your local waste management facility to inquire about upcoming collection events in your area.
How do I know my mattress is really being recycled?
At DR3, we take recycling seriously. Our recycling centers support community services such as meals, shelters, housing, and supportive services for the most vulnerable in our community, and our goal is to recycle as many mattresses as possible to support these services as well as divert as much from the landfill as possible . DR3 Recycling is a certified recycler through the Mattress Recycling Council (MRC), a non-profit Extended Producer Responsiblity (EPR) program overseen by the state it acts in. The Mattress Recycling Council is overseen by CalRecycle in California, and the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) in Oregon
The Mattress Recycling Council has recycling minimums and required outputs that each recycling facility must meet, which varies by state. For more information, please visit the Mattress Recycling Council's website.

My mattress is in good condition - can I donate my mattress instead of recycling it?
Yes! You can bring your mattress to any of our California or Oregon collection sites or recycling facilities, and our staff will separate the reuseable mattresses from those that are for recycling. Mattresses that are in good condition, free of rips, tears or stains will be sanitized and given to St. Vincent de Paul of Lane County, who will donate them to persons getting off the street into our supportive or affordable housing programs. Because each mattress at our collection site is handled by an employee, DR3 is able to easily inspect and separate reusable mattresses.
I brought my mattress to the Eugene recycling facility and it says St. Vincent de Paul Society of Lane County, not DR3. Are they the same thing?
DR3 Recycling operates under St. Vincent de Paul Society of Lane County (SVdP), a 501(c)(3) non profit. Proceeds from all DR3 operations go to St. Vincent de Paul of Lane County services - affordable housing, emergency shelters, meals, and supportive services in Lane County. Because DR3 also operates outside of Lane County in places where other unaffiliated branches of St. Vincent de Paul operate, we chose DR3 to represent our mattress recycling facilities no matter where they are located.
What kind of mattresses can you recycle?
DR3 Recycles mattresses of all kinds, but there are a few limitations.

We can recycle the following kinds of mattresses:
- Standard Spring Mattresses
- Box Springs
- Foam Mattresses
- Pocketed Coil Mattresses
- Hybrid Mattresses
- Sleep Number Beds

Items we can NOT recycle:
- Air Mattresses
- Dog/ Pet Beds
- Crib/Playpen Mattresses
- Water Beds
-Futons
How can mattress recycling be free?
Both California's and Oregon's mattress recycling programs are part of Extended Producer Responsibility legislation which imposes a fee at the time of your mattress purchase to pay for recycling, but you can still drop off your mattress for free even if you haven't purchased a new one. In California it is mandatory to recycling your mattress (it's illegal to dispose of your mattress in a landfill), but in Oregon recycling is optional. We hope you'll choose to recycle your mattress with us instead of adding to landfill waste!
I want to purchase a mattress that's recyclable. What should I know before I purchase a new mattress?
Not all mattress components are recyclable, and some are easier to recycle than others. The simpler the mattress, such as a traditional spring mattress, the easier and more cost-effective it is to recycle. Most foam mattresses are recyclable, although foams with latex and gel components are not. Pocketed coil mattresses are the most difficult and the least cost-effective to recycle. They often consist of many layers of materials glued together which must be separated, and each coil must be individually released from its pocket.
